Divine Mercy is Something God Wants for All

“A week later, the disciples were once more in the room, and this time Thomas was with them. Despite the locked doors, Jesus came.” —John 20:26

Divine Mercy Chaplet Sung By Kayser Swidan

The image of the Jesus’ Divine Mercy that I have hanging in my fireplace room appears to be the moment that is depicted in this Gospel scene. The Apostles are hiding out in the upper room one week after the resurrection of Jesus. They are afraid that they are next on the chopping block so to speak. Some have seen the risen Lord, some have not. Thomas was one of them who had not seen Jesus, and who would not believe the stories that others has seen Jesus risen unless he saw Jesus, himself, in the flesh.

“THE BEGINNING AND THE END” (RV 22:13)

“The Lord God said: ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a suitable partner for him.’ ” —Genesis 2:18

The first spoken words in the Holy Bible from man are about the topic of marriage. Adam rejoices that he has been given his beloved wife Eve: “This one, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh” (Gn 2:23). The last time a human speaks in the Bible is likewise a word of rejoicing about a marriage: the Bride, that is, the Church, together with the Holy Spirit say, “Come!” (Rv 22:17) The bride rejoices that she and her spouse are united in marriage. The Scriptures between the beginning marriage and the ending marriage are all interconnected in the ardent love of God for mankind and the human longing for union with the Lord. The entire Bible is sandwiched between two shouts of married joy (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1602).

Holy Boldness

Acts 14:5-18 Psalm 115:1-4, 15-16 John 14:21-26

“On one occasion he was listening to Paul preaching, and Paul looked directly at him and saw that he had the faith to be saved.” —Acts 14:9

Would you have the courage and the assurance to yell at a person in a wheelchair: “Stand up! On your feet!”? (Acts 14:10) By that bold command, St. Paul healed a crippled man who had never walked a step in his life (Acts 14:8).

Paul didn’t always have such boldness. For example, for several days, he put up with the disruptive behavior of a girl with a clairvoyant spirit (Acts 16:16). “Finally Paul became annoyed, turned around, and said to the spirit, ‘In the name of Jesus Christ I command you, come out of her!’ Then and there the spirit left her” (Acts 16:18). Sometimes it took Paul days to give the command that would heal and deliver.
