Most of us spend at least 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year at work, but a small percentage of us work in an official church role. Meaning the vast majority work in secular jobs. If we are a Christian, are we not working for Jesus no matter who our actual employer is? The answer is yes.
What does job performance for Jesus mean then? Christians are to permeate the world with the Good News of the Resurrection, and means to salvation that Jesus won for us through His cross. Christians are to live the Gospel, and be imitators of Christ, not just on Sunday while at church, or if the are employees of the church. They must act Christlike with all they encounter.
When we work for Jesus in our secular jobs, we live in the freedom of the resurrection, rather than slaving away for earthly wages. Of course, we must discern where God wants us to serve, but rather than changing jobs perhaps we have to change our mindset with regard to who we are working for. When we cheat our employers, or fail to give our best efforts, are we in effect cheating God?
These are challenging words no doubt especially if our current employer or situation is less than idea. Below is a reflection on this topic by Father Al Lauer of Presentation Ministries. He offers a unique perspective on how to view work and greater detail what job performance for Jesus really means.
